TrafCam Upcoming projectsA list of things we're working on, or considering working on, here at TrafCam. If you have any suggestions for other things you think would improve our products, please feel free to send us an email. TrafCam for TomTom Go - Update - Now Available (3-Sep-08)We're finalising the next release of TrafCam for TomTom Go, which will have a number of new features, including:
TrafCam Camera Location DatabaseWe are gradually noting a new camera type, which will be a forward-facing static camera. Although our database stores the "relevant direction" for each camera, it would be nice to differentiate between static cameras of the traditional "Gatso" type and the newer infra-red designs, particularly for customers who have a very short warning range set. In addition, there is some confusion between the TrafCam "Truvelo" description (which refers to sites now more commonly know as DS2) and the static cameras made by the Truvelo company, so we'll be updating the software to try to make it more obvious. TrafCam for Symbian: Support for S60 third edtionWe're working on implementing TrafCam on the new S60 third edition. This includes phones like the Nokia N73 and N95. This should also mean that we can use the internal GPS receiver on the N95 and the new Samsung i550. We're also hoping to have a trial version available as this has proved very popular with our TomTom Go software. Update 4-Dec-2007: the basic functionality is running correctly, but the database needs updating to include speed limit and direction information. A new method of retrieving data from the GPS Receiver is also required. More information will appear on the site as we have it. TrafCam for Pocket PC: Database installer programWe are working on an update to the database installer program which will allow the TrafCam program settings to be edited from the PC. For those who find the settings screen on the PDA a bit fiddly, the program can make all the same changes that the device can, with the exception of browsing the device for sound files. When done, the settings are saved back on to the device. TrafCam for TomTom Go: Live database updatesNot really a "coming soon" feature, more of a "not coming soon" - we had intended to have the software periodically check for database updates if the Go device was paired with a suitable mobile phone with internet access. However TomTom tell us that the required features of the developers kit (the library we use to develop TrafCam for TomTom Go) are now disabled for the latest navigation software. So it looks like the only option is to check for updates via the PC control centre software. All Versions: Direction-sensitive Camera WarningsWe are in the process of gathering direction information for the speed cameras on our database. This will allow future versions of the TrafCam programs to behave differently when they encounter a speed camera, depending on what direction the camera is facing. The current release of TrafCam for Palm OS asks for camera "direction of relevance" when a subscriber marks a new camera location. A special version of the program that we are testing here in the office (well, on the roads around the office) checks this additional information, and if it considers that the camera is not relevant to you, it doesn't make any sound as you approach the camera. Once proved, this feature will be added into each of the TrafCam program versions. Of course, you can switch the feature off if you prefer. So far, the following TrafCam versions can make use of this information:
TrafCam for Pocket PC: Links to other navigation systemsSince early 2003, it has been possible to run TrafCam at the same time as the TomTom Navigator street-level mapping and navigation system on the Pocket PC. Users of other navigation systems will be pleased to know that, with the use of a third-party product, we are now very hopeful that we should be able to do the same for many other navigation systems in the near future. Update (26.08.2004): Testing with a third party product which allows TrafCam to share GPS data with other programs. Some program modifications are required as the program takes a lot of CPU time which means that the navigation system runs very slowly. Testing (for now) with Destinator 2. TrafCam can now make itself the foreground application, provide warning, then switch out of the way when the camera is passed. Initial slow running was due to the test program being in 'trace' mode, writing all data to a file. Update (19.10.2007): Back in contact with ALK Technologies, it may well be possible to work alongside CoPilot 7. Awaiting more information from ALK. Update (29.03.2005): More testing, now with Navman SmartST v2 on an iPAQ 3850. The slow-running problem appears to be back with a vengeance, but might be a lack of memory on the iPAQ. On my 3850, running at the same time as SmartST means that both programs currently run so slowly that they are unusable. February 2006 - released versions of TrafCam to work alongside Medion Navigator version 3.1 and the Garmin iQue M5 bundled navigation software. Update (21.11.2006): Tested on Windows Mobile 5 with Navigon Mobile Navigator 5 successfully. This version of TrafCam uses the WM5 "GPS Manager" to share GPS data. Recent UpdatesThings that were recently in "coming soon" but have now been released...
