The TrafCam Camera Database
We maintain our own database of speed camera locations. Some cameras are reported
by TrafCam subscribers, and we have our own team who drive around the country keeping
the database as up to date as possible. Currently the database covers mainland Great
Britain and the Isle of Wight.
For each camera, we store the location and type of camera. In addition, for an
increasing number of cameras we also store:
- Road name - where the camera is on a numbered road (A56, M6 etc.).
- Speed Limit - where the speed limit is constant.
- Direction - the direction you need to be travelling for the camera to be relevant.
The extra information is in the process of being gathered by our spotters as
we review the database contents.
The database includes the following types of cameras:
| Gatso Cameras - the traditional fixed speed camera found on the side of the road. Fixed
speed cameras are manufactured by a number of different companies including Gatso and Truvelo. |
|
SPECS sites - the "time over distance" camera networks typically found in
motorway road works though also used by some local authorities as permanent installations.
SPECS cameras work in chains of two or more cameras, and track the speed of a vehicle by
measuring the time taken between each camera.
|
|
| Truvelo sites - also known as "DS2" installations a semi-permanent camera
site which consists of sensors buried in the road
surface connected to a post that a patrol vehicle would connect measuring equipment to. These
are used less often now but are still popular in some areas.
| Frequent Mobile traps - a location where a mobile camera van or car is often found. By
their nature these are often viewed as false alarms, and in most versions of TrafCam users
can disable this category of warning. These locations can include bridges over motorways, lay-bys
on the side of the road, or the "Police Vehicles Only" areas found on the side
of many motorways. Mobile trap locations are typically submitted by our subscribers with
local knowledge of a particular trap location.
| Forward-facing fixed speed cameras - we are now starting to differentiate between
"normal" fixed cameras (the first in this list) and the fixed cameras that do not
flash and point towards the driver. This distinction will help us to offer different
warning ranges for different camera types.
TrafCam subscribers can opt to receive email notification whenever the camera database
has changed. This is sent by email to the subscribers registered email address on a daily
basis. In addition, the top of every page of this web site shows the date that the camera
database was last updated.
