TrafCam for TomTom Navigator

We have a special version of TrafCam for Pocket PC devices. In response to demand, this special program will run alongside TomTom Navigator versions 1.5 to 6, and provide you with the ability to run Navigation and Mapping software, while still receiving warning as you approach a speed camera location.

How does it work?

Instead of connecting directly to a GPS receiver, TrafCam gets its position information from TomTom Navigator, which must be installed and running on your PDA. This means that there is no clash between the two programs trying to access the GPS port - TomTom Navigator has control of the port, and shares the information with TrafCam.

During normal operation, your TomTom Navigator screen will be on display, either showing map or navigation information. Every five seconds, TrafCam will check whether you are in range of a camera. If a camera is found, the display will switch to TrafCam and you will see a warning arrow, just like in the normal TrafCam program. Once the warning is over (either because the camera is out of range, or because you have acknowledged the camera by pressing the screen), the TomTom Navigator screen will appear again.

We did consider drawing the camera locations on the TomTom map, but we felt that this would lead the drivers attention away from the road while trying to compare your own position with the nearest camera. So, we keep the traditional TrafCam screen which is easy to read.

How can you buy this version?

Simply choose 'TrafCam for Pocket PC' from the list. Once your subscription is active, you can download the TomTom Companion version of TrafCam from the members area of our web site.

Does it work with TomTom Navigator v2?

Yes.

Does it work with TomTom Navigator v3?

Yes.

Does it work with TomTom Navigator v5?

Yes. You need to have the 5.10 or later update for TomTom Navigator, available from the TomTom web site.

To check what version you have, start the TomTom Navigator 5 program and tap the screen. From the menu, choose "Change Preferences". From the preferences menu, choose "Show Version" and the exact program version will be shown. If it's lower than 5.10, you need to download the update from TomTom.

Does it work with TomTom Navigator v6

Yes, the same software works with both TomTom Navigator v5 and v6. TomTom Navigator version 6.030 introduced a problem, but an updated version (v6.031) is available from the members download area of our web site.

Does it work with the HP / TomTom Navigation Pack?

(This refers to the package from HP which includes the iPAQ rz1710 and TomTom Navigator which reports itself as version 4.4)

No, there is no developer kit for this combination.

Does it work with the "Traffic" add-on for TomTom Navigator?

A subscriber has reported that yes, TrafCam will work alongside this add-on package.

What do I need?

• TomTom Navigator software, version 1.50, 2.0, 3.0, 5.10/5.21 or 6
• Pocket PC with sufficient storage for TomTom maps
• TrafCam for Pocket PC subscription
• Connected GPS receiver (any GPS receiver compatible with TomTom GPS driver)
• Memory Requirements:
  • Around 200k for TrafCam program and database installation, around 3Mb to run
  • Around 100Mb for TomTom Navigator, depending on map(s) loaded. Check with TomTom for more information on this.
