Speed Camera Warnings on your TomTom Go - now with voice warnings!
TrafCam for TomTom Go brings a professional speed
camera location database and warning system to this popular range of personal
navigation device.
When a camera is within your chosen warning range, TrafCam will provide a voice warning
to alert you. It will also display an informative message in the top corner of the
screen, and draw an icon on the map display. Information shown includes the camera type,
speed limit, road name and distance.

Position Tracking feature exports log to various programs
In this screen, the icon shows the position
of the camera, and its speed limit (40mph). The message in the top
corner of the screen shows the camera speed limit, the
camera type (Gatso), distance to camera (0.1 miles) and the road name (A51). The flashing message
will be on the screen from the point where the camera is first found, to just after the camera
has been passed. A sound is made when the camera first comes within range, and repeatedly when
close to the camera, unless you choose otherwise.
The majority of speed cameras in our database include speed limit and "direction of relevance"
information, which means that you can configure TrafCam to remain silent if you are not exceeding the speed limit
for the camera, or if the camera is not relevant to the direction you are travelling in. This helps to reduce false
alarms.
On-device control
When installed, TrafCam adds some additional icons to your TomTom menu. These icons allow you to
increase or decrease the TrafCam warning range, to enable or disable the position tracking feature
of TrafCam, and to suspend or resume TrafCam operation if you wish.
Position Tracking
When enabled, TrafCam will store your position every thirty seconds, into a file on the
TomTom device. Using the control centre, you can retrieve this log information and store it in
a format compatible with other applications like Microsoft Autoroute or Google Earth (not included).
Installation, updating and user settings are controlled by an easy-to-use program
that runs on a Microsoft Windows PC. This program will handle all aspects of downloading
the program, database, icons and sound files from our server and installing them on your
TomTom Go. For now it will also control user settings such as warning range. You'll need a
Windows PC and an Internet connection for this to work.
Customising
You can customise the way that TrafCam warns you about cameras, by loading your own
icons and sounds onto the device. Custom icons and sounds are installed in addition to the
standard ones, so they will not be overwritten if you download an update from our web site.
Icons are standard bitmap files, and can be created in many different graphics editing
programs that are widely available. The control centre makes it easy to load your custom
icons onto the device. Sound files must be in "ogg" format, so will need
to be converted from other formats prior to installation. We've used programs called "oggdropXPd"
and "Audacity", which are freeware programs available to download. More information on file names is included
in the manual available below.
Compatibility
We have tested TrafCam on the Go 300, Go 510 and Go 710, and we believe that it should work
without problems on all of the TomTom Go range. Subscribers have tested on various other models
including the 520, 720, One, OneXL and Rider, and reported that it works correctly. Your device does
need to be running at least version 6 of the navigation software - earlier
versions don't properly support the interaction with TrafCam. We've tried it here on a 510 that
was upgraded to version 7.160 and it works as expected, and the 7.161 update seems to be
fine, too. As soon as we can get an update to version 8, we will test and report the results.
Please note TrafCam for TomTom Go will only work on TomTom devices - if you have
something similar such as a Garmin Nuvi, Navman iCN, or other personal navigation device, TrafCam
for TomTom Go will not work. It probably won't even install.
Simple Installation
TrafCam is installed using our "Control Centre" application which runs on a standard
PC running Microsoft Windows. It can be downloaded from here and
installed on your PC. Using the Control Centre, you can download the free trial version of
TrafCam to your Tom Tom Go, edit the user settings, and check for updates. You can download
the manual in PDF format which covers how to
install the control centre and how TrafCam works on your TomTom Go. If you download an updated
version of the control centre, you must uninstall the previous version before you install
the new one.
If you have problems with the free trial version of TrafCam for TomTom Go, please send us
an email to info@trafcam.com and we'll get back to you as
soon as we can.
