TrafCam for Microsoft Pocket PC and Windows Mobile
TrafCam for Microsoft Pocket PC provides GPS speed camera warnings
on your Windows Mobile device. The software package compares your
current location, taken from a GPS receiver, to our database of
speed camera locations, and provides a visual and audible warning
when you are close to a camera location.
Windows Mobile 5
TrafCam is available for PDAs that use the Windows Mobile 5 system.
Most of the functionality of the earlier TrafCam software is still present,
along with some new features. The new software uses the Windows Mobile 5 "Managed GPS"
feature to share GPS data with other program, and will run correctly in portrait,
landscape and square-screen devices.
Windows Mobile 6
Quite a few of our subscribers are happily running TrafCam on devices which use
the Windows Mobile 6 system.
The Warning Screen
 |
When you get within range of a speed camera location, the software will display
a warning screen. It shows:
- The direction to the camera (the large central arrow).
- The camera type - "Mobile" in this example.
- The distance to the camera - "0.5" here.
- Your current road speed
In addition, the latest version of TrafCam provides additional information
about a growing number of camera locations. The example screen here shows:
- The speed limit at the camera location - 30mph here.
- The road name that the camera is on - A54 here.
- The relevant direction of the camera - this camera is effective in two
directions so the symbol in the top right is not a standard arrow.
|
Because this screen shows the device at rest (notice that the road
speed in the left corner is zero), the position is also displayed on
the screen in latitude / longitude format. This could be useful in the
event of needing to call out a recovery service for example. The various
versions of TrafCam for Microsoft devices vary slightly, but the basic
information displayed is roughly the same.
Flexible configuration
The TrafCam program includes a comprehensive "settings" page
which allows the user to change warning range, warning sounds, interaction,
and so on. You can assign a different warning sound to each camera type,
so you could record your own voice giving different warnings. You can choose
to exclude camera warnings by speed limit, direction, or even choose to
have no warnings at all below a certain road speed.
Driving Tools
As well as camera warnings, TrafCam includes a number of useful tools
for general motoring:
- Speed Warning - you can set a speed warning at a chosen speed,
and whenever you exceed that speed a warning noise will sound, regardless
of whether a speed camera is anywhere near.
- Large Speedo - You can enable a large speedometer which will
show your GPS speed (normally more accurate than a car speedometer) in
large digits on the display. The same display will also show a small
compass to indicate north. On Windows Mobile 5 devices, the speedometer
display is a dial rather than large digits. Note that this is only on the screen when there
is no camera warning.
Standalone, or with a navigation system
TrafCam is available in a number of different versions on the Pocket
PC platform. These include:
The "Standalone" version - this version talks directly to the
GPS receiver on a serial port, and will not share the GPS information with
any other programs. It can be made to interrupt other programs when it has a
camera warning, for example you could revert to the "Today" screen
when driving, and have the camera warnings come to the front when relevant.
|
The "TomTom Navigator" version - this program is similar, but instead
takes its position information from the TomTom Navigator software. This allows
it to run at the same time as TomTom Navigator, so it will automatically switch
between navigation and speed camera warnings. This program will run at the
same time as TomTom Navigator versions 1.5 to 6, though you must have the
5.10 or 5.21 update from TomTom if you are using Navigator 5. More information
|
The "Garmin iQue M5" version - in a similar fashion to the special
version for TomTom Navigator, this program uses the iQue driver to allow it
to run at the same time as the supplied navigation software.
|
 |
The "Medion Navigator" version - this uses a special feature of
Medion Navigator version 3.1 to allow TrafCam to co-exist with Medion
Navigator. Note that newer versions of Medion Navigator have this feature disabled,
so it will only work with version 3.1.

|
TrafCam for Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 uses the "Managed GPS" feature of the platform
which should allow it to work at the same time as any compatible navigation package. So far we have
tested it with Navigon Mobile Navigator 5, with complete success.

Windows Mobile device, please check out this page.

TrafCam for Pocket PC subscribers have a choice at download time of
which version to use. So there isn't a different subscription to select, or
different prices*. You could take out a Pocket PC subscription and run it
standalone, then you could switch to the TomTom Navigator version later on -
it's just a case of dowloading the different program version.
* - Some versions of TrafCam might require additional software
from other suppliers in order to operate, which may incur an additional cost. Some features
described only apply to certain versions of TrafCam. Navigation software is not
included in the TrafCam software and must be purchased separately.
